Recent Relaunches: ZDFmediathek and Stiftung Warentest

Jens Meiert, September 17, 2007.

This entry is filed under Web Development, Accessibility, Usability, Design.

Especially German readers might be aware of two notable redesigns and relaunches: On the one hand, the new multimedia appearance of German broadcasting company ZDF, ZDFmediathek (site opens new window), and on the other hand, the new website of the independent testing institution “Stiftung Warentest”, test.de.

Fortunately, I had “something to do” with both relaunches (though quite more with test.de); unfortunately, I cannot reveal more than that, and even what I say can certainly be figured by just checking my LinkedIn profile, for example, and the Aperto press releases.

However, what I may add is that the ZDFmediathek was a very challenging project where you cannot enough praise the outstanding work of all project managers, software developers, and scripting experts involved. But, when it comes to the frontend, the project initiators as well as the concept team missed an almost historical chance to enable creation of a state-of-the-art, best practice case for accessible media. I’m a little bit sad, me who may not tell more.

Concerning test.de, you can observe certain issues that arise when three+ parties are involved. But, and that’s a different “but” than before, the outcome is a very good basis and a major improvement, related to usability, accessibility, and code quality, and also in comparison to the former version (June 2007). (It also avoids those “Conditional Comments”, by the way.)

So that have been two projects I had an “ominous something” to do with. But I guess that may be mentioned.

Regarding the ZDFmediathek: when i read usage-notes, my browser “warns” that a site wanted to open a popup (without any user-action) or i need an additional plugin to use or see the content…

… well, then it takes exactly two seconds and i’m away.
Although i can imagine how complex all that backend stuff might be, but as a user, i don’t care about that. So i agree: “far from SOTA”. Anyway i like the ZDF Designs.

Erik, right, people might not – do not – care about these issues. And good to know that there’s (certainly) not only ZDF who likes their interfaces ;)

    You’re welcome, Stefan :)

hehe the new design of ZDF is interactive, also its a little bit to slow..maybe because of my browser. The style is great, very new modern and it has a web 2.0 flair.
