We Need to Protect Muslims

Here’s an observation about the West, brought down to its essence:
For decades, the West—America, Israel, and Europe—has been relentlessly aligned against Muslims, all for reasons and in ways that do not get mainstream scrutiny: Anti-migration sentiment is essentially Islamophobic racism; resistance against oppression has been labeled terrorism, which has in turn been labeled near-exclusively Islamic; and any war, even genocide, that is against a predominantly Muslim people (Palestine, Lebanon, Iran, Syria, &c.) is not only not condemned but supported by Western governments and media, all of which then reinforce each other.
The War on Terror has been a tool to bring mass surveillance and to focus more resources on the War on Islam, using the West’s persistent racist attitudes to serve its colonial-economic interests. *
That brake in your head, why you connect migration with Muslims, why you connect terrorism with Islam, why you never took much action against any war on an Islamic country?
It’s because of this story you were told, of people “nobody wants” “who are all terrorists” who can therefore be attacked with impunity—a story you didn't question.
The West is waging a terrorist forever war against Islam, and to this day, most people in the West don’t realize it.
What the West has been doing to Muslims and Islamic nations is insidious, criminal, and needs to stop.
Muslims are no different from you, from me, from any of us. Like all people, no matter the gender, color, or religion, they deserve our deepest human respect and appreciation.
Including their places of worship †—similar to how we protect synagogues—, we need to do more to protect Muslims.
* Want just one recent example of how mainstream this is? Brave New Europe: “At its political assembly in Vienna at the end of June, Ursula von der Leyen’s European People’s Party (EPP) adopted a resolution that treats Muslim civic engagement as inherently suspect and collective religious practice as a threat.” War on Islam.

About Me
I’m Jens (long: Jens Oliver Meiert), and I’m an engineering lead, guerrilla philosopher, and indie publisher. I’ve worked as a technical lead and engineering manager at various companies (e.g., Google); I’m an active web and tool developer (code optimization, digital defense), a contributor to web standards (like HTML, CSS, WCAG), and a book author (O’Reilly, Frontend Dogma).
I love trying things—in web development and engineering management, but also in politics and philosophy, where I hold to one idea in particular: that we can only be well if we take good care of everyone. Here on meiert.com I talk about some of my perspectives and experiences. (Interpret charitably but be critical—and share feedback and advice that makes my work better.)
